The zoo is part of the Schönbrunn UNESCO world heritage site and is the world’s oldest zoo. It was inaugurated in the summer of 1752 by Emperor Franz I. It was originally reserved only for Habsburg family members. Later on, this exotic animal menagerie opened its doors to the public.
